PLAY BALL!
A New Season Begins
The end of spring training is a relief to many.
Hope springs eternal in the never ending quest for
a wild card spot, a division title, league championship
and that ever elusive World Series victory.
But alas, the best laid plans of mice and men. It's
the reality for most of us as Murphy's Law
occurs every season. Usually in the form of a
key major injury. It is the bane of our existence.
Nevertheless, we promote that AAA phenom, reset
our defensive alignment, adjust the lineup
and sign that big name star to a multi year,
multi million dollar, no trade contract which can define
the franchise for multiple seasons, good or bad.
While in the back of the mind is that old
adage of Mr Murphy.
So the staff of BO KNOWS BASEBALL
wishes best of luck to all of the intrepid franchise
owners. Keep the faith, baby. Have no fear
and go boldly into this new season.
FEATURED BOOK
MONEYBALL by Michael Lewis - The funniest, smartest, and most contrarian book since -- well, since Lewis's Liar's Poker, Moneyball is a quest for something as elusive as the Holy Grail, something that money apparently can't buy: the secret of success in baseball. After mining all the obvious possibilities, Lewis was left with the mystery of how the Oakland Athletics, one of the poorest teams in baseball, won so many games. Here he records how general manager Billy Beane -- alone among Major League managers -- paid attention to some very humble statistics in order to find and field a team that nobody else wanted on the second-lowest payroll in baseball.
